Get a 30% discount on 2TB SATA SSD for £150 | Rock Paper Shotgun

We have discussed the Crucial MX500 before, but the short version is this: it is a fast SATA SSD that also provides great value. Today, its value is even higher than the normal price in the UK, because Amazon discounts the huge 2TB drive to £149.97, which is 30% lower than the normal suggested retail price of £214.

Looking at other 2TB SSDs on Amazon, it is difficult to find anything at a better price. Even the relatively cheap and cheerful SanDisk Ultra costs 163 pounds, while drives that use cheaper QLC flash memory are the same price—for example, the Samsung 870 Qvo, which is one of the best SSDs recommended by Katharine. Crucial BX500 is 10 pounds cheaper, and the equivalent 2TB size is 140 pounds, but this drive does not have DRAM cache. This makes it a bit slower than the MX500 in normal use, especially for continuous writing. All things considered, I will buy MX500 at a lower price-hence this article!

The only real competitor is another Crucial drive P2. This is an NVMe drive that can achieve faster speeds than 550MB/s Crucial MX500-read speeds up to 2400MB/s. However, it does require an NVMe slot, which is usually limited to one or two on most mainstream motherboards, so you may find it easier to add SATA storage like the MX500. However, if you do have a free slot, then P2 is a better choice than the MX500 because it is much faster and only costs a relatively small premium of £8.

Another interesting option is Crucial X6, which is also discounted today. It is 147 pounds, which is about 50 pounds less than last week. This drive is often discounted, but if you often need to carry large files with you, it is still a good choice; I use a similar drive to watch 4K videos on the TV. However, for things like game storage, due to the limitations of the USB interface, you will notice that the loading time is a bit slow, so the extra portability will definitely bring a compromise.

With this, I think we cover more or less all the reasonable 2TB drive options available. MX500 or P2 would be my first choice, but almost everything I mentioned is very reasonable-except SanDisk Ultra, sorry.
